Umi Syam is a Graphics/Multimedia editor at The New York Times. Projects she was involved with have earned several awards and honors from the Society for News Design, the New York Press Club, Malofiej, The NYT Publisher’s Award and the Society of Publication Designers.
She was born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia 🇮🇩 where she finished her undergraduate in Informatics at Bandung Institute of Technology. Umi started her first career at Microsoft Indonesia for four and half years before moving to New York in 2014. She received her masters degree from Parsons School of Design’s MFA Design & Technology in 2016, where she also had taught classes in advanced web and data visualization for two semesters right after.
Outside of work, she really is just busy going around the city eating the good stuff.
