The Most Awesome Omurice Ever
Omurice (オムライス, Omu-raisu) is a fluffy egg omelet upside down served on top of oval-shaped fried rice, usually served with ketchup or demi-glace sauce. I've been watching this wicked omurice video since 2010 and promised myself that someday when I visit Japan I HAVE to go and try this kind of omurice. Actually it's not that we don't have omurice in Indonesia, there are many restaurants that claimed to be serving omurice, but usually it's fried rice covered in a blanket of (overcooked, if not burnt) omelet and served with an instant-packed chili sauce; which is disappointing.
SO AFTER ALL, IT'S A FOODIE'S DREAM.
Yes, it was on top of my checklist before I went on a short trip to Japan last month, along with other things like 'riding shinkansen', 'eat Okonomiyaki in both Osaka & Hiroshima style', etc. Long story short, I finally made it to Kyoto, in this particular restaurant named Kichi-kichi. Shocking headsup, 1 serving will cost you ¥2,500 (around IDR 255k), but since it didn't count as an ordinary dinner; let's think of it as one way towards fulfilling a dream-come-true :p
The chef, who looks like half Japanese & half French, doesn't speak English at all. But he's super friendly and in fact, when I said that I'm from Indonesia & visited Kichi2 because of YouTube; he immediately put on a show to entertain all of us, lol that makes a great video! I love how he flipped the pan when cooking the fried rice, and the best part is - without no doubt - when he cut open the omelet at (see minute 2:28 below). It was OH. MY. GOD!!
In the end, I'm so glad I made a trip there. Traveled 5485 kilometers all the way to watch a spectacular live show on how the most awesome omurice is being made. Well worth it :)
