Meet My All Time Favorite Snack: CIRENG
Cireng ("aci goreng"), is a popular street-snack made of tapioca starch with various filling & form, then deep fried until it gets crunchy on the outside, while keeping its soft-sticky-and-chewy-bites on the inside. The most popular filling is the thick peanut paste, but nowadays people like to experiment with any kinds of filling and form, from sausages, spicy chicken, meatballs, cheese, etc. They're usually differentiated by its shape, e.g. star-shaped for cheese, half-moon for sausages and so on; and priced at a cheap IDR 1.000-2.000 a piece.
I've said it before, Cireng to Indonesian is as addictive as French Fries to Americans, and Tteokbokki to Koreans, lol. Had lived in Bandung for over 4 years during college, it was more than enough for cireng to leave a long-lasting impression to me :p It's cheap, tasty, and you can found them almost everywhere. But ever since I moved back to Jakarta, I tell you, it's quite hard to find cireng stalls on the street. Even if it's available, they're nothing like what I usually had in Bandung.UNTIL ONE DAY... I FOUND OUT THAT CIRENG CIPAGANTI NOW PROVIDES DELIVERY SERVICE :D
Yes, Cireng Cipaganti is one of the MOST famous cireng stall that has been selling in Cipaganti main street since 2004 (although they have relocated 2-3 times). I recall that they used to sell only the peanut-paste filling, which remains as the BEST seller until now. But now they also have corned (hash beef), cheese, and abon (shredded beef) filling and also 'Cilok'. Cilok (aci dicolok), uses the same main ingredient: tapioca starch, molded and shaped like a cherry-tomato sized with minced beef filling, then steamed and ready to be eaten with spicy ground peanut sauce. OMG DIE DIE MUST TRY!
I had a pleasant delivery experience. The order came in just 1 day after! Packed tight in a sealed vacuum pack, they say it is best eaten in 4 days for cireng, and 6 days for cilok; in a dry storage on your freezer. Each pack only costs IDR 10.000, you'll get 10 for cireng, and 15 if you ordered cilok. You will also get a pack of thick peanut paste, which is quite spicy by the way, but goes really really well to compliment both cireng & cilok.
Last two weeks, I had a chance to visit Bandung, and I just couldn't miss visiting their original stall in Jalan Cipaganti. Very nostalgic indeed! I'm glad I have access to it every time I feel like craving these snacks. It's safe to say, that these are my all time favorite Indonesian snacks :) Give it a try, no more excuse since it can be delivered to your front door at any time.
